Rik van den Bergh pays tribute to pianist, arranger, composer and producer Duke Pearson.
When he became aware of the playing, composing and arranging of Duke Pearson, Rik does not exactly recall. “Perhaps it was while listening to the Cannonball Adderley Quintet, playing one of Duke’s most popular compositions, Jeannine. Or maybe it was Duke's contributions to Stanley Turrentine's records The Spoiler and Rough 'N' Tumble, both recorded in 1966 for Blue Note.
Rik realized at one point that Duke Pearson was on many recordings that meant a lot to him, like Mean What You Say by the Thad Jones / Pepper Adams Quintet. “Pearson was a heavy cat in his days. His melodies are always strong, the harmonic structures underneath are always challenging. His tunes contain the blues, the tradition of the American songbook, and typical hardbop vocabulary. It is all there.”
